Megara Hyblaea : revisiting a model in the light of latest archaeological excavations – Jean-Christophe Sourisseau (Aix Marseille University), Reine-Marie Bérard (Aix-Marseille University)
Following their important works in Megara Hyblaea from 1949 on, Georges Vallet and François Villard had theorised a model of Greek urban foundation in the West that encountered a great success. They assessed that the urban plan of the city, structured around the agora, was entirely settled from the very time of the foundation – which they placed, according to Thucydides (VI) around 728 BC. This model was discussed and revised in 2004 by Michel Gras, Henri Tréziny and Henri Broise in the volume Megara 5 – La cité archaïque in the light of a global revision of ancient and new excavations data. One of their major contributiosn was introducing the concept of a « phase des campements », prior to the setting of the final urban plan and corresponding to the first decades of installation of the Greeks.
20 years after this important work, new studies show that the foundation date of the city needs to be revised. Besides, new excavations resumed in 2017, in particular in the North-Western sanctuary, and large-scale geophysical prospections have demonstrated that the urban developpement was not done in one go.
This paper will thus present and discuss significant evolutions of the long-standing Megarian model and their consequences for the history of the Greek presence in the West.
